Chicago Bears History
The American Professional Football Association was born during a meeting in the
showroom of a Hupmobile auto agency in Canton, Ohio on September 17, 1920. One
of the attendees of this historic meeting was George Stanley Halas, who was representing
the Decatur Staleys. Halas' Staleys and the 11 other teams represented at the
meeting were the founding members of this new professional football organization,
which would later become known as the National Football League. The Decatur Staleys
finished with a record of 10-1-2 during their first year in existence. Due
to poor economic conditions, however, A.E. Staley's company could not continue
to support a professional football team. Therefore, Halas moved the Staleys from
Decatur to Chicago in 1921, where they became the Chicago Staleys. A year later,
Halas changed the name of the team for the second and final time to the Chicago
Bears. Since the team's inception, the Chicago Bears have participated in
the playoffs 23 times and have won nine world championships. In 1997, the Bears
became the first team in NFL history to notch 600 victories. The team has also
sent 25 players and one general manager to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which
is the most of any team in the NFL. Three of the NFL's ten-biggest single-game
attendance totals have occurred at games involving the Chicago Bears, two at Soldier
Field.
